Spotlight On: Kim Hughes

News - 31 October 2019

Spotlight On is the platform where you can get to know some of the members of our team. Each edition looks at the biggest value-add each role brings to clients, what's the best thing about working for ABN AMRO and answers to a number of personal questions. This week the focus is on Kim Hughes, Relationship Manager at ABN AMRO Commercial Finance UK.

When did you join ABN AMRO Commercial Finance?
I joined ABN AMRO in April 2018 following 7 years at RBS Invoice Finance where for the last two years I worked in Specialist Management looking after clients with financial challenges and potentially facing insolvency. This was a great part of my career where I was able to develop my skills for the future. Prior to this I worked for Yorkshire Bank for 9 years where I actually started out my banking life as a cashier in branch at 18 years old. I worked my way up over the years to personal banker, mortgage advisor and then into commercial banking looking after business clients as an assistant. So I think it’s fair to say I have earned my stripes in the banking world.

Describe your role at ABN AMRO Commercial Finance…
My role is Relationship Manager based in Manchester although my ‘patch’ covers the North of England. I manage around 50 business clients with turnovers ranging up to £25m. No week is ever the same in my role which is why I enjoy it so much. From client meetings, to writing credit papers for new ABL facilities, to dealing with internal and external stakeholders...

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Client meetings and interaction is the best part of the job. Building relationships, getting to know and understand the journeys your clients are on and being able to assist them in that journey what ever it may be. The job keeps you on your toes and your mind active which can only be a positive; it stretches your abilities and enables you to develop further.

What’s the biggest value-add your role brings to clients?
Being able to provide a solution to a problem, being able to support my clients reach their goals. At ABN AMRO we offer more than just Receivables Finance which provides me with the tools in my kit bag to get creative with solutions.

What's the best way to start the work week?
With a large cup of coffee.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I took up running in June 2018 following a difficult period in my life. I can honestly say it has changed my life and provides an outlet for those stressful days (which we all have); it has benefited my Mental Health significantly. I love travelling and seeing the world which is something I do as regularly as I can - for me travelling fills the soul. For my sins I have held a season ticket at Manchester United for 23 years enjoying some great and more recently not so great match days!

What was your dream job as a child?
I wanted to be a police officer, something I actually pursued at 17. Unfortunately due to an arm injury earlier in my life I wasn’t able to progress.

What makes your heart beat faster?
Watching Man U on a Saturday… Running up hills and of course my lovely husband Richard who I have been with for 20 years.
